The Discovery Zone is housed on the top floor, with access to outside classrooms and the green roof area. Among the teaching classrooms and ICT area is a lecture-style room, where up to 60 students can be accommodated for team-teaching lessons.
All students study science throughout their time at John Ferneley, and are encouraged to develop their scientific curiosity through opportunities for scientific enquiry, helped by improving practical skills. The specialist staff have the expertise and resources to stretch the most able students as well as supporting those who find the subjects covered more challenging. An awareness of the environment is promoted and students are encouraged to question the ethics of modern scientific technologies.
Complementing “Discovery”, in the widest sense, is Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). All teaching staff - under the expert guidance of the Lead Teacher of PSHCE - are involved in facilitating discussion sessions on topics important for all young adolescents, such as personal relationships and citizenship.
