Spiritual , moral , social and cultural development and British values

School is far more than just learning the curriculum.

At John Ferneley College we believe that everything we do contributes to our student’s SMSC development. We recognise that the personal development of our students plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve their full potential. We look to our curriculum and also outside of it to promote the SMSC development of our students, and to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

We aim to achieve this through:

The curriculum

All subject areas contribute and promote the development of SMSC both in and out of lessons. We have a thorough RE and PSHE programme which by its subject matter makes a particular contribution to this.

Assemblies

We have a full assembly programme which deals with aspects of student’s SMSC development and where we also celebrate the success of our students.

Tutor system

Each student has a form tutor who is responsible for their academic, social and personal welfare. Daily tutor periods ensure students are receiving the right amount of support and development. We have also launched a new tutor time activity called Votes for Schools where students are debating and voting each week on a topical issue.

Extra-curricular activities

We encourage the SMSC development of our students through a wide range of activities outside of the classroom such as theatre trips, Duke of Edinburgh, College shows and performances plus school trips to New York, Barcelona and WWI battlefield sites in Belgium and France. Themed weeks also help promote SMSC development.

Student voice and leadership

Tutor reps, peer mentors, prefects as well as the student council allow opportunities for our students to demonstrate leadership and responsibility.

A strong reward system

At JFC we have a strong reward system with the allocation of positive points on class charts to reinforce our student’s SMSC development and positive behaviour.

Everything we do involving SMSC is recorded on the JFC SMSC grid as a way to effectively track and monitor our provision.

British Values

We also actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. This is done through assemblies, performances and displays as well as the JFC Charter Challenge that we have just launched for Years 7-9 in which students are able to have an input in the writing of our new college charter which will come into effect next year.

We have also launched a new tutor time activity; Votes for Schools is a brilliant system where students are debating and voting each week on a topical issue. Questions that have been debated recently include ‘Does the UK need more nuclear energy?’ and ‘Are we able to openly talk about mental health issues?’.
