Why train with us?

We are a fast-growing, highly successful 11-16 college, set in Melton Mowbray. Part of the Mowbray Education Trust, there are many opportunities for you not only to train with us, but begin an exciting career!

Routes into Teaching

Currently, we offer the SCHOOL DIRECT pathway to teaching in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Computer Science
  • Design and Technology
  • Business Studies
  • Geography
  • History
  • Languages
  • Art
  • Music
  • Drama
  • PE

Trainees begin their training at the end of August each year, and stay with us until the end of the academic year in July. If you choose to train with us, you will receive top-quality training within a school environment. In addidtion, you will spend one day per week at Nottingham Trent University to enhance your pedagogical knowledge to take back to the classroom. At the end of the year, if successful, you will receive Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and be fully qualified to teach!

Many people believe teaching is unfeasible as a result of workload. At John Ferneley, we have adapted much of our practice to ensure you only ever carry out tasks which directly impact on students. This begins in your training year!

Bursary Information

As a trainee, you can receive funding depending on your subject specialism and degree class.

Recruitment Events

We are holding recruitment events on the following dates:

Friday 17th March - 0930-1200

Friday 31st March - 0930-1200

During the event, you will discover the vision of the college, receive a tour of our outstanding facilities, find out more about the School Direct route to teaching and discuss signing up to one of our School Experience Programmes.

School Experience Programme

We run this programme so you can experience what it would be like to work at John Ferneley. We work around you, so if you want to experience a day, a week or a month, we will be able to support you. We can also offer travel expenses to assist with you getting here!
