aN INTRODUCTION TO FUTURES at john ferneley
As a college we continue to develop our service, to maximise our offer fully expecting enrichment and student development, to enhance their chances of finding the right courses at post-16 and beyond, and help each student consider possible career paths in future life.
Through a robust process of opportunities and experiences, all students will be fully prepared for further education and a career that both suits and inspires for a lifetime. This is complemented with a continuous careers service from Years 7 to 11.
Students write letters highlighting their hope , dreams and aspirations for adult life, which will be used by tutors and the careers advisor, to suggest routes they may take in the future when looking at careers.
Through PSHCE students will learn about and develop employability skills– This will include how to look and apply for a college place , apprenticeship or job through to interview skills . Students in year will also embark on careers advice and groups will be highlighted, that may need extra guidance or already have a desired pathway to a future career .
All students will have careers interviews during the final two years at The College and as many as needed to guarantee their placement at an appropriate College or Apprenticeship . Each student is guided as to how to apply , write a letter of application an da CV where necessary . A post 16 market place is hosted in September, to give students the opportunity to discuss with providers, possible courses and destinations and to start to make decisions on future pathways.
Students applications are also prepared for desired destinations and the process is monitored by their Pastoral Leader and our Careers Guidance Practitioner, throughout. Students are guided through the interview process. Once destinations are confirmed taster days are arranged, so that students can visit providers and prepare for the coming year. Year 10 are also involved in 'INDUSTRY DAY', where they get opportunity to meet local businesses and experience future careers and discuss the routes taken to make these choices. All Year 10 students are offered work experience at the end of the academic year as they embark on the next stage of their careers journey (this is arranged through Leicester Education Business Company - LEBC).
We work with many Further Education institutes, such as Brooksby Melton College and MV16. Students are encouraged to visit Sixth Forms and College open days; we also offer trips for students to visit University open days, including Oxford University and Leicester De Montfort University.
