Drama

Curriculum Intent Overview

At Mowbray Education Trust, our Drama curriculum equips students with the skills to create, perform, and evaluate theatrical work, fostering creativity, collaboration, and confidence. At Key Stage 3, students develop foundational skills in vocal and physical characterisation, drama conventions, and techniques from key practitioners. They explore scripted performances, devising from stimuli, and different theatre styles, building a deeper understanding of drama as an art form.

Practical work is supported by written evaluations and drama journals, encouraging reflection on both personal performances and those of others. Assessments focus on creating, performing, and evaluating, through performances, written tasks, and class discussions.

The curriculum prepares students for Key Stage 4 by introducing the skills and knowledge needed for GCSE. Students explore devised and scripted work, and gain an understanding of technical theatre elements like lighting and sound. The inclusive curriculum ensures all students can succeed, and the skills developed—teamwork, communication, and critical thinking—are key for further study at Key Stage 5.

Drama fosters transferable skills such as collaboration, public speaking, and problem-solving, all of which are valued in education and employment. Extracurricular opportunities, such as performances and showcases, enhance learning and offer real-world contexts for applying their skills. Drama also encourages empathy, cultural awareness, and self-expression, helping students become confident, well-rounded individuals.
