Curriculum Intent Overview
At Mowbray Education Trust, our English curriculum equips students with the skills to become confident, articulate, and thoughtful communicators, both in school and beyond. We aim to develop pupils' reading, writing, and speaking abilities, fostering a deep understanding of language and literature.
In Key Stage 3, students build a strong foundation in core skills, exploring a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. They focus on literary techniques, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary, while engaging in discussions, presentations, and debates to develop their oracy skills. The curriculum encourages connections across subjects, fostering a holistic understanding of the world.
The curriculum is designed to smoothly transition students from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4, where they further develop their analytical skills and prepare for GCSE English Language and Literature examinations. Pupils will build confidence in applying their knowledge to new contexts, becoming independent and critical thinkers.
The English curriculum inspires a lifelong love of reading and enhances life skills such as problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication. It empowers students to express themselves, advocate for others, and engage with diverse perspectives. Through this, we prepare students for further education, the workplace, and active participation in society.
