Geography

Curriculum Intent Overview

At Mowbray Education Trust, we believe that a high-quality geography education should inspire curiosity and fascination about the world, equipping our pupils with the knowledge and skills to make sense of their place within it. Our geography curriculum aims to promote a deep appreciation of diverse places, people, resources and environments, alongside a nuanced comprehension of the Earth's key physical and human processes.

Content and Skills

Our geography curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4 will provide a balanced exploration of physical, human and environmental geography topics, allowing pupils to explore the complex interrelationships between the natural world and human activities. Pupils will develop a strong grasp of core geographical concepts such as sustainability, globalisation and inequality, applying these to a diverse range of places and scales. Underpinning this substantive knowledge, our pupils will progressively acquire and refine a range of transferable and technical skills, including data analysis, cartography, fieldwork techniques and effective communication.

Progression

The geography curriculum has been carefully sequenced to build upon pupils' prior learning and prepare them for future study. In Key Stage 3, pupils will develop a strong foundation in geographical concepts, focusing on the local area and gradually expanding their understanding to the regional, national, and global scales. This solid grounding will prepare them for the more in-depth and challenging content of the Key Stage 4 GCSE curriculum, where they will delve deeper into topics such as sustainability, globalisation, and environmental management.

Wider Impact

By the time our pupils leave Mowbray Education Trust, we aspire for them to be critically engaged global citizens, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to navigate the complex and ever-changing world. Through their Geography studies, our pupils will develop a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of the world, an understanding of the impact of human actions on the environment, and the ability to think critically about the pressing issues facing our planet. These skills and insights will not only serve them well in their future academic and professional pursuits but also empower them to make informed decisions and positively contribute to their local and global communities.
