Science
Curriculum Intent Overview
At Mowbray Education Trust, we believe that a strong foundation in science is essential for our pupils to make sense of the world around them and to prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century. Our science curriculum is designed to cultivate scientific curiosity, equip pupils with key skills, and provide a solid basis for further study and lifelong learning.
Content and Skills
At Key Stage 3, our science curriculum is structured around 'big ideas' that span the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics. Pupils will develop a solid grasp of foundational concepts and knowledge, whilst also building essential skills in areas such as analysis, communication, enquiry, and problem-solving.
Practical work is embedded throughout the curriculum to support conceptual understanding and the development of investigative abilities. Through practical investigations, retrieval practice, and the use of diverse teaching strategies, we aim to ensure that pupils not only acquire a deep understanding of scientific knowledge but also become confident and capable scientific practitioners.
Progression
The Key Stage 3 curriculum lays the groundwork for the more advanced study of science at GCSE. Pupils will experience a spiralling curriculum that revisits and builds upon key concepts, allowing them to develop increasingly complex mental models and secure their knowledge over time. By revisiting and building upon core concepts, we help pupils develop a coherent, interconnected understanding of scientific ideas. Frequent retrieval practice and interleaving of topics reinforce learning and support long-term retention.
At Key Stage 4, pupils will have the opportunity to either study combined science or pursue the separate sciences of biology, chemistry, and physics, depending on their interests and aspirations. Regardless of their chosen pathway, our aim is to systematically develop and sustain learners' curiosity, enjoyment of scientific activity, and understanding of how natural phenomena can be explained.
Wider Impact
The study of science at the Mowbray Education Trust goes beyond the classroom, with opportunities for practical investigations, field trips, and interactions with STEM professionals. These experiences nurture pupils' curiosity, develop their problem-solving abilities, and inspire them to consider future careers in science-related fields. Our science curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions, engage with scientific developments, and contribute positively to society.
